Jens Bogehegn

DP and Zacuto Product Designer

Interested in photography and filmmaking since childhood, Jens Bogehegn has been shooting short movies starting on Super 8 since 1978. Always with a camera in hand, he easily transitioned into the role of High School Yearbook and Newspaper Photographer. After attending Drake University in Journalism studies, he then completed his education at Columbia College as a Film Major graduate with a camera internship on "The Untouchables." Additional film course work at the Maine Workshops round out his educational background.

Jens has been a professional freelance cameraman since 1985 and has freelanced on numerous projects as a Steadicam owner/operator from 1988 through 1998. As a member of IATSE Local 600, his union credits include: The Untouchables (TV), Waynes World II, U.S. Marshals, and his independent credits include: The Oprah Winfrey Show, Watch It, and Cosmic Voyage (IMAX).

Having worked with Steve Weiss as his DP/Cameraman since 1986, Jens has been DP on over 600 productions together with Steve in the corporate/commercial & political space. Jens and Steve became partners in Zacuto films in 2000, starting out as a production house, evolved into a rental facility and than became a manufacturer of custom camera support accessories in 2005 under the Zacuto USA brand. With shooting experience of over 27 years, his background and hands-on experience make him an excellent source of inspiration as he offers a unique approach to innovative product design.

Zacuto consistently introduces new concepts to the market. Some have been subsequently adopted by other manufacturers and are now the ‘industry standard.’ Concept products like: ‘Quick Release’ components that can be attached without using screws, ‘Universal’ products that are adjustable for all cameras and rods coming out of the back of the camera for shoulder mounting and counterbalance, these are only a few of the original ideas that Zacuto has brought to the industry. Zacuto products are also made exclusively in the United States and have a lifetime warranty even for accidental breakage.

Coming full circle, film and video veterans Jens Bogehegn Producer/DP/Host and Steve Weiss Producer/Director/Host created one the first long running web series, FilmFellas, first aired in December 2008. FilmFellas offers viewers a behind the scenes peek into the minds of influential and emerging filmmakers, “Where talking film is the family business.” Since 2008 FilmFellas has had 8 individual casts and 40 webisodes garnering an Emmy nomination (midwest region) in 2010 and winning an Emmy for outstanding achievement in interview/discussion programming in 2011 episode 34 “Commitment to the Craft” featuring Jens Bogehegn, Rodney Charters ASC, Nancy Schrieber ASC & Stephen Goldblatt ASC/BSC. In August 2009, Jens and Steve launched their second webisodic series, < critics >. This new show, co-hosted by Steve Weiss and Philip Bloom (a London based Cinematographer, blogger and industry celeb) candidly critiques web based video content. < critics > offers an eclectic mix of personalities, perspectives and laughter. In 2010, assembling a world-wide cast of influential filmmakers and screened at Lucas Film Skywalker Ranch, AFI and in Chicago, “The Great Camera Shootout 2010″ showed the world how a DSLR would fare against 35mm film in a battery of tests. The Great Camera Shootout has had over 2M views, was the only web series, along with FilmFellas to be nominated for an Emmy (midwest region) and then won an Emmy Award in 2010 for Outstanding Achievement in an Informational Program.

In the fall of 2010, Jens Bogehegn and Steve Weiss created and developed BTS: a web series “A Documentary About Making Documentaries.” Launched in March 2011, the web series follows Director T.C. Johnstone, Producer Greg Kwedar and their entire film crew and documents their journey in the making of “Rising From Ashes,” a film about Rwandan’s first ever national cycling team. The BTS episode Hit the Ground Running was nominated for a 2011 Emmy award (midwest region) for outstanding achievement in a documentary program. In 2011, in the largest Zacuto production to date crediting over 750 people The “Great Camera Shootout 2011″received an Emmy nomination (Midwest region) for Outstanding Achievement for Informational/Instructional Programming. The Great Camera Shootout 2011 was a documentary of the Single Chip Camera Evaluation SCCE a camera test administered by Robert Primes, ASC.

By 2012 Zacuto USA’s product line had grown to over  340 items, making Jens one of the leading trendsetters in the camera package design. Now known as an industry leader, day in and day out, Zacuto continues to show how it can easily adapt its unique products to every camera on the market.

Jens has been a tinkerer from an early age. Taking apart and rebuilding, in a custom way, his bikes, making sensitive microphone type devices, or building simple elevators in the giant back yard tree, inventing and problem solving has always been a part of his personality. You may see Jens show up to work on his “Hog” or 1965 Cobra as he is a motorcycle and classic muscle car enthusiast. A direct descendant of the Vikings, traveling and exploring is a constant yearning and one that Jens can’t wait to engage in with his two boys, Hayden and Hunter and wife Cara. Jens has been shooting, photographing, producing, renting & inventing in the film & photographic business since 1978, professionally since 1986 and Both Bogehegn and Weiss have worked together as Director/Cinematographer since 1986, together they have created in both film and video over 600 commercial, corporate, documentary & fashion projects as well as 6 web series with over 63 episodes.
