Sony F3 Video – Camera & Kits

Focusing on the expanding indie filmmaker market, Sony has released a new super 35mm digital production camera, the F3.  The newest member of the CineAlta lineup, this camera inherits a lot of its features from the F35, which has been used for years in high-end digital filmmaking.  Anyone familiar with previous Sony cameras may also notice a lot of similarities to the EX1 and EX3 as far as workflow capabilities are concerned.  The Sony F3 is outfitted with the brand new Exmor Super 35 CMOS image sensor, a PL lens mount, HD-SDI output and SxS card recording.  The PL mounting option gives shooters the option to mount any PL lenses, including the new Zeiss CP2 lenses.  According to Sony, this is a camera for “professional shooters, resulting in high-performance digital capabilities at an ‘indie’ price.” Of course, this makes it the perfect camera for a Zacuto rig.  The Sony F3 has high sensitivity and shallow depth of field.  These features make the camera ideal for use in many digital production applications, ranging from feature film work to indie budget documentaries to corporate videos.

Our Cine Baseplate Kit is also created for shooting with the F3 on a dolly or tripod. This kit comes with a Zacuto Universal Baseplate, a Zacuto Doublemount and our Red Plate.  The Doublemount and Red Plate give the shooter the option to mount V-mount or Anton Bauer style batteries on the back of the rig to power a monitor or other accessory.  The back end of the rig also acts as a weight to counterbalance the weight of the lens and camera body. In addition to the accessories mentioned above, our Cine Baseplate Kit also includes a large Zamerican arm and a wireless plate.  The arm is typically used to mount a monitor and the wireless plate can be used to hold anything from down converters to video transmitters to wireless microphone receivers. 

The EVF Filmmaker Kit is specifically designed for use with our EVF.  It can be used for either a shoulder mounted configuration or for use with a tripod or dolly.  Instead of offsetting your camera, this rig uses a shoulder pad and Q-Release that mounts directly underneath your baseplate.  This way you can position your EVF to the side of your rig instead of using the camera’s eyepiece.  The EVF Filmmaker Kit allows shooters to mount a variety of accessories.  Whether it’s a matte box, monitor or wireless microphone receiver, the EVF Filmmaker Kit has you covered.  This kit comes with our Zgrips Beefy, Z-Focus, EVF Rod Mount and Zwiss Plate with your choice of battery mount.  The Zwiss Plate system also acts as a counterbalance weight when the rig is in the shoulder mounting configuration and Zacuto’s Zgrips Beefy give you all the stability you need.  The Indie EVF Kit rig can switch between a tripod rig and a shoulder mount rig in a matter of seconds.  

Another exciting accessory for Sony F3 owners is the Z-Finder EVF, our electronic viewfinder. The EVF will allow you to align your F3 and rod system to position the viewfinder on the side of the camera. This enhances your rig’s stability and allows the user to position his or her eye to whatever position is most agreeable to them. The EVF, in combination with our award winning Z-Finder Pro, enhances flexibility when shooting handheld and creates a more standard workflow for cinema style shooting.
