First Look Panasonic DVX200 – living in the new four-thirds world
The Panasonic DVX200 4K handheld camcorder is making us all reconsider the four-thirds sensor format. With an integrated zoom lens, a single MOS sensor with 4K resolution and up to 12 stops of dynamic range, Panasonic’s AG-DVX200 brings professional features to familiar camcorder ergonomics. We had a chance to chat with Al Cherne from Panasonic to talk specs, the “film look”, and why the DVX200 will be your new favorite second camera for documentary, event, and run’n’gun shooting.
New 4/3-type Sensor for Beautiful Bokeh Effects and 4K Resolution
The Panasonic DVX200 is the world’s first 4/3-type large format camcorder with integrated zoom lens. While the camera shines and captures clear images in dimly lit locations, it can also create a beautiful, soft Bokeh effect by blending 4K resolution with shallow depth of field.
LEICA DICOMAR 4K Lens
The high-performance LEICA DICOMAR 4K lens from Leica Camera AG boasts a strict multi-coating process that minimizes ghosts and flaring. The use of a low-dispersion glass suppresses chromatic aberration. All of this leaves you with crystal clear images and very little color bleeding.
What’s the result?
Director of Photography, Sebastian Wiegärtner, had a chance to shoot with a pre-production model and released this stunning short film to show off what the camera can do.
“This is the perfect camera for Documentaries and fast TV work stuff, where you have to be fast and where you still want to achieve a cinematic image. Due to the M4/3 sensor it’s way easier to focus than with a Super 35 or Full Frame sensor.” – Sebastian Wiegärtner
Ready to take the Panasonic DVX200 to the next level? Our Next Generation Recoil Rigs and Gratical HD EVF or customizable Gratical X EVF will do just that. (And not only because the stunning red and black DVX200 body matches our gear so perfectly!) Our Next Gen Recoil Rigs are all about BALANCE!! With modern lenses and cameras being similar weights, the balance point is approximately where the lens meets the camera body.
Recoil rigs moves the balance point directly over your shoulder putting the camera behind you. This requires focus (check out our Z-Drive follow focus), monitoring (with the Gratical EVF, of course) and camera controls to be relocated forward, creating a lighter, shorter, and balanced rig. The Indie Recoil is a perfect fit for this camera, or, for a more slimmed down look pick up our 3″ Z-Rail and Z-Rail Rod Lock 90.
