The web series bts (behind the scenes), “Chasing the Light”, nominated for Achievement in Topical Documentary Programming, shows the problems documentary filmmakers face shooting over long periods of time in a hostile environment. Documentarians T. C. Johnstone and Greg Kwedar struggled for five years against unimaginable odds to make “Rising from the Ashes”, the story of Rwanda’s first national cycling team—a group that literally rose from the ashes of war and genocide. In episode two, “Chasing the Light”, the Zacuto bts crew captured the team as they fought fatigue, racial tensions, and the clock to get their story told.

Receiving a nod for Outstanding Achievement in Interview/Discussion Programming, Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012: Episode One, “Starting with Darkness” will enlighten and hopefully change the way you feel about technology, talent and its relation to your film. From the comments posted, it will move you emotionally and make you want to go out and want to shoot, improve you skills and learn. This program, 10 months in making with over 700 people involved, addresses many questions like “What is talent?”, “What is light and how do you use it?”, “Do the new digital cameras change the innate principals of cinematography?”

Zacuto brought together a legendary group of cinematographers to address these questions including: Haskell Wexler ASC, Janusz Kaminski, Stephen Goldblatt ASC/BSC, Rodney Charters ASC/CSC, Victor Kemper ASC, and many more. Under the direction of test administrator, Bruce Logan ASC, all cinematographers were allowed to adjust the lighting of the same scene to make their camera look its very best. The same tests were repeated with no lighting adjustments to evaluate the out of the box camera performance. With this empirical testing, viewers are able to evaluate if it’s the technology or the talent of the cinematographer that is most important when creating beautiful images.

Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012 is much more than a camera evaluation. We set out to discover what the role of the cinematographer is, the impact of raw talent and how important equipment is in the making of a great film. When Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012 was released it created a world-wide controversy as many in the industry were disturbed at how difficult it was to discern the differences between a $600 to $100,000 camera in blind theatrical screenings and on the web. Digital camera technology has reached a new level where quality tools are available to everyone, but is it the camera technology or the cinematographer who makes a beautiful film? Their answers will inspire, move and shock you.
